NESCom Writer Publishes Novel

Twilight and Harry Potter may have a new fiction series to compete with called the Xsardis Chronicles. Book one of the series called “Issym” came out in November and the author, 17-year-old Jessie Mae Hodsdon, is barely older than the main characters Seth and Rachel. “They, like many kids, have an imagination where dragons, fairies and the like exist. When they grow up they get sucked into this world they imagined,” Hodsdon says. While on the mystical continent of Issym, Seth and Rachel have to decide whether to follow their own desire to escape back to Earth or put their trust in God and remain in Issym to help those living there.

Hodsdon, a Bangor resident who is taking a class at both NESCom and Husson this semester spent her evenings and early mornings writing this 145-page novel. Writing the story she says was the easy part. “Editing was hard because it seems like it’s a critique of you, which is hard, but it’s actually a critique of your work to try and make it better,” Hodsdon says.

Finding a publishing company wasn’t easy either. After a lot of research Hodsdon decided to self-publish her work. “I already sold 8 books to people I don’t know so that makes me happy,” she says. Hodsdon sold several more during her first book signing at Angelo’s Pizzeria in Bangor on November 28th.
This ambitious teenager says someday she’d like to own her own national publishing company. In the meantime her work can be found at Lamb’s Book & Bible in Bangor or online at www.issym.com.
