It was an unusual sight on Wednesday as dozens of students and faculty gathered in a tent to sign the final steel girder to be put in place for the new Learning and Living center. “As we’ve noted we wanted to do something a little different. Once the project got rolling we didn’t have time for a groundbreaking ceremony so we thought we would try something different and instead sign a steel girder” said president William Clark.
The main focus for the speech was on what the new building is going to be like and what it will be used for. The Learning and Living center will be five stories high. The first floor will contain five new classrooms; the next four floors will be used for dorms rooms.
The building itself will be pretty energy efficient as well. “This building is going to be more energy efficient then any other building of its type in the state. One of the reasons for the boomerang shape was how the building will relate to the tract of the sun and uses the sun during times of the day and year when it's most beneficial,” said Winton Scott of Winton Scott architects.
Scott went on to talk about the humanistic approach to the design of the building as well, talking about giving students and faculty a place to meet and hang out. There will be a terrace and a place for sitting right outside.
A new building for classrooms has been much needed especially over at the New England School of Communications where class sizes have grown larger than some of the rooms.
Following the speech and commemoration, all in attendance, which included representatives from political offices around the state, faculty form both Husson and NESCom, as well as students, were all invited the sign the final girder that will be put in place in December.
