Boxing legend Micky Ward (pictured right) paid a visit to Husson University on Thursday night. Students gathered in the Gracie to watch “The Fighter,” the film which is based on the life of Ward. At the conclusion of the film, Ward came on stage with his manager to talk to students about his involvement with the film, as well as the life and times of Micky Ward as they really happened.
Photos, slides, and videos were shown of Ward’s hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts where he is known as “the pride of Lowell.” The audience got to see some of Ward’s old fight footage, as well as some video from outside of the ring. This included footage of Ward’s brother Dicky’s drug use. Dicky was not in attendance for the event due to his recent back surgery.
Ward then talked about his involvement with the movie, “The Fighter.” He says that he had been working with actor Mark Wahlberg for almost seven years, and have come to be very good friends in the process. According to Ward, “about 90%” of the movie is accurate to what happened to him in his life. Some of the scenes and situations are exaggerated due to the fact it is a Hollywood movie, but overall the movie follows very closely to Ward’s experiences.
At the conclusion of Ward’s presentation, the audience had the chance to ask questions. Inquiries ranged from Ward’s involvement in “The Fighter,” to questions about his family life.
One person asked if Ward’s seven sisters behaved in real life as they were portrayed in the film. Ward answered jokingly, “they are worse.”
