Just two weeks ago, the Husson women’s basketball team held a record of only 4-7, and was sitting near the bottom of the North Atlantic Conference standings. Now, going into Saturday’s game against Maine Maritime, the lady Eagles are standing tall near the top of the NAC standings.

It was a tough start to the season for the Eagles, as they dropped their first three games, and four out of the first five. They started out with three losses against non- conference teams; playing Centenary, St.Josephs (Long Island), and Bates college respectively.

Once the calendar turned from November into December, the Eagles started to play more games against teams in the NAC. They went 3-2 in the month of December, and all three wins came against NAC teams, including a big overtime win against conference favorite Castleton State.

Husson head coach Kissy Walker admits that it wasn’t an easy start to the season, but things improved once conference play started. "We were playing some pretty tough competition,” says Walker. "The kids tend to have a different mentality when it comes to conference play. They're much more confident."

The Eagles are 0-7 in non-conference play.

Castleton State is the only thing standing between the Eagles, and a firm grasp of first place in the conference. Both teams went into Friday night with 9-1 conference records, but Castleton improved to 10-1 with a win over Thomas College on Friday. Husson’s win against Castleton back in December gave them the tie breaker, so a win Saturday night puts the Eagles back in first place.

The Eagles have been led by their senior point guard, Amanda Gifford, and senior forward Brianna Hanscom. Hanscom leads the team in scoring, averaging just over 13 points a game. Gifford came out of the gate slowly, as she had just finished up the soccer season. She has come along nicely and now leads the team in assists. “Those are two seniors we rely pretty heavily on,” says Walker.

Right now, Husson is riding a five game winning streak, and all their wins coming by double-digits. All five of the wins have come against NAC teams. The Eagles won in convincing fashion last Saturday at Thomas, dropping 87 points on them, and winning by 39 points.

Eight of the Eagles’ remaining nine games will be against NAC teams.

On Saturday, the Eagles will travel to Maine Maritime to take on the Mariners. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m, and the Husson men will play at 3 p.m.
