BANGOR -- The Husson women’s basketball team showed why they are one of the conference’s best, as they defeated Green Mountain College 81-62 at Newman Gymnasium. Husson dominated the first half, as they lead 52-31. The half ended with Husson going on a 22-10 run.
Green Mountain could not handle the aggressive zone defense that was thrown at them, and that resulted into a lot of fast break points for Husson. Husson coach Kissy Walker said that their help side defense created most of Green Mountain’s turnovers. “We could take chances on double teaming because our help side was so strong.”
Senior Brianna Hanscom had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Eagles while classmate Amanda Gifford had 18 points, including nine behind the arc. This inside out duo was unstoppable throughout the entire game. Green Mountain was unable to contain both at the same time. “We were able to play inside-out basketball,” said Gifford. “When we play like that it makes the team so much better.”
Husson had a great transition game, resulting in several easy layups. Husson also made 18 free throws, the result of Green Mountain’s 14 fouls. Fouling was the only way to slow down Husson’s fast pace. In comparison, Green Mountain only made nine shots from the charity stripe. “We were trying to attack the hoop, and we were successful tonight,” said Hanscom. “We love to run. This style of play really fuels our defense.” Husson took many uncontested shots, a testament to great cuts and stellar passing. Husson had 21 assists on the day, including six by Kelli Murray. One play featured Murray passing to Hanscom who cut to the left block. Hanscom quickly turned around to find a wide open Gifford for an easy two points.
“We did a great job finding open spots on the floor,” Walker stated. “We executed our offense well, but we also did a good job of just finding the open person. We took advantage of the good looks we were given.”
Chanleigh Casey and Millicent Hopper led Green Mountain with 15 points apiece. It was a special night for Hopper, as she reached the 1,000 point mark. Hopper also had 11 rebounds for the Eagles. Green Mountain drops to 2-16 on the season, remaining winless in conference play. Husson improves to 10-8 on the year, with a 10-2 record in conference play. Husson welcomes top ranked Castleton State to Newman Gymnasium Saturday, looking to move up to second place.
